Melide
It appears reference for the first time of Melide in century X. King Alfonso IX granted the Terra de Melide to the archbishop of Santiago. Later the archbishop of Santiago, Berenguel de Landoira, raised a castle to fortify the city. In 1467, during the revolt of the Irmandiños, they met in Melide and they were against to the archbishop Alonso de Fonseca and the nobleman Sancho Sanchez de Ulloa. At the end of the revolt it is when the Convent of the Sancti Spiritus is constructed, that is the present parochial church.
In 1520 they met in Melide important ecclesiastical and noble of the time, to decide to be united in necessary case in support of king Carlos I, against the Comuneros. Already at more recent times, Melide in century XIX has special protagonism, when fighting against the French in the war of the Independencia.
Melide is the capital of the region Terra de Melide.
From always, Melide was united to the Way of Santiago that crosses it. In his centers of welcome, the traveller can rest of the long trip and visit monument multitude, distributed by his geography: the Church of Leboreiro s.XIV, the Church of Sta. Maria s.XII, the Roman bridge on the Seco river (Leboreiro), the bridge Romanesque of Furelos s.XII, the chapel of San Roque.
Next to the chapel of San Roque it is the "cruceiro" older of Galicia (S.XIV).
Within the historical helmet we have the monumental set, with the parochial church or Convent of the Sancti Spiritus (s.XIV), with tombs of XV and paintings of the XVI, in addition to a baroque altarpiece. This set also is formed by the chapel barroca of San Antonio, to its side the consistorial house and closely together the old Hospital of Travelling, today Museum of Terra de Melide. Several churches of Romanesque Art like those of Golán and Moldes. Without forgetting to us most recent of the Virgin of the Carmen.
